WaqrapukaraTour
The Waqrapukara Trek is a hidden gem—perfect for travelers looking to explore this remarkable archaeological site before it draws the crowds. In Quechua, "Waqra" means “horn” and "Pukara" means “fortress,” a fitting name for this unique structure perched at 4,140 meters (13,582 ft) atop a dramatic ravine blanketed in lush vegetation. This ancient fortress is surrounded by impressive agricultural terraces, ceremonial plazas, and a surreal landscape of stone formations that resemble mythological giants, standing as silent guardians over the breathtaking Andean scenery.
We’ll pick you up from your accommodation at 4:00 a.m., setting off on a 2.5-hour drive to the town of Marcaconga, and then continue to the Pitumarca district, where a hearty breakfast will be waiting for us.
Once we’re fueled up and ready, we’ll drive another 30 minutes along a zigzagging unpaved road to reach the starting point of the hike. You’ll have a moment to gather your belongings and prepare before we begin.
The first leg of the hike is approximately 2.5 hours, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains, small glacial lakes, and the high Andean landscapes that stretch out before you.
Upon reaching the Waqrapukara viewpoint, we’ll take a short break to rest and snap your first photos of the impressive fortress, perched dramatically on the edge of a canyon.
From there, we’ll begin a 40-minute descent along a steep trail bordering the cliffside, with the Apurímac River rushing far below. Once at the site, you’ll have around 1.5 hours to explore, climbing through the archaeological remains, admiring ancient stonework, and capturing photos of the incredible canyon scenery. The views here are truly unforgettable.
When the group is ready, we’ll begin the ascent back along the same route. After about three hours of hiking, we’ll reach our private transport and begin the return to Cusco, arriving at approximately 7:00 p.m.
